TimeOut Chicago's Review of Steve Reber: Recent Work at Around in the Coyote Gallery

With an exhibition that explores the visual and conceptual possibilities of sculpture through spatial and material relationships, the Around the Coyote Gallery is pleased to announce Steve Reber: Recent Work, a solo exhibition that surveys Chicago-based artist Steve Reber's most recent body of work.

In his sculptures, Reber combines building materials such as plywood, plastic laminate, and decorative paneling with found objects, or "cultural debris". This combination of both prefabricated elements and found objects constructs a visual experience that is at once familiar and ambiguous, blurring the boundaries between the real and the abstract. His conscious manipulation of material through repetition and scale, which fluctuates between miniature and oversized, creates both visual tension and a de-stabilization of our spatial understanding. Certain aspects of Reber's artistic practice, such as his exploration of the relationship between sculptural and architectural space, have their roots in minimalism. However, like that of fellow contemporary artists Cady Noland and Robert Gober, his work makes more specific cultural and personal implications.

Steve Reber received his M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art and has exhibited extensively in Chicago, Maryland and Washington D.C. Reber has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards and was a Visiting Artist at both the University of Chicago and Columbia College. He is represented in Chicago by Peter Miller Gallery and since 1998 has been an assistant professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Steve Reber: Recent Work is part of Chicago Artists Month, the eleventh annual celebration of Chicago's vibrant visual art community. In October, 250 exhibitions of emerging and established artists, openings, demonstrations, tours, open studios and neighborhood art walks take place at galleries, cultural centers and arts buildings throughout the city.
