About the Program
Around the Coyote is pleased to present the new ATC Gallery Winter Residency Program that provides artists 4 weeks of full access to our 2,400 square foot gallery space in Wicker Park and an accompanying 3 week exhibition at the gallery opening on February 7th that continues through February 28th. This program is designed to encourage new and emerging artists from all over the country to develop a site specific exhibition of their art practice and concepts through new and original work. Artists are selected upon the merit of their work and written statements describing their proposed use of the residency.past artists-in-residence ... Guidelines
The proposal must use the entirety of the gallery space, and be site specific. All proposals should put strong emphasis on how the piece will command the space. The artist will be expected to use our gallery as their studio for the production of the installation during the month of January. The finished piece(s) will open to the public with an artistŐs reception on Saturday, February 7th and continue through February 28th. The artist will be asked to be present at the opening reception and available for interaction with viewers during the creation of the piece. Upon de-installation, the artist will be awarded a $1,500 stipend for their work. Gallery Layout
Runners up for the residency will receive free acceptance to our Fall Arts Festival if they should wish to participate.
Specifications:
- Work must be original. The installation must be original and site-specific to this residency.
We do not want you to recreate a previous installation.
- Work during January. We would like you to use the month of January as the month where the
preliminary designs are refined and the installation is put together. We do not expect a full-time commitment, but you should expect to be in
the gallery working for at least 15 hours each week.
- Use the gallery as a studio. We know that every artist works in a unique manner, and we don't want to hamper your process,
but it is important for the goals of the residency that the majority of the work for the installation be completed in the gallery,
unless it requires resources that we are not able to accommodate in the gallery.
- Interact with visitors. During the construction and installation of the artwork we would like you to be able to engage visitors in
discussion about the work, its concept and execution, your motivations, and your career as an artist. The Artist-in-Residence will be expected
to give a short presentation regarding their installation, past work, and working as an artist in general during the month-long exhibition.
- Attend the opening. You should plan to be present at the opening reception for the exhibition of the finished project.
- Clean up. After the close of the exhibition you will have 3 business days to deinstall your artwork and return the gallery to its original condition. This may include painting and spackling if deemed necessary by ATC, so be sure to allow time for this.
Promotion
ATC Gallery will handle the full promotion of the exhibition through postcards, a full web page, emails to our 16,000 person data base and press release to all Chicago media outlets and beyond. The program is designed to expose new and emerging artists to a comprehensive 4-week studio experience in the gallery; this provides the selected artist with an uninterrupted work environment to build their concepts for the exhibition immediately following the 4-week studio allotment.Selection Process
Applications are reviewed by ATC staff members Allison Stites (Executive Director) and Patricia Courson (Visual Art Coordinator) and chosen at their discretion. Artists will be notified by phone no later than 3 weeks before the scheduled residency start date. ATC staff may ask to schedule a studio visit or private meeting with artists before making their selection.Application Deadline
